Repairing in 19th century style

For this season Levi’s Vintage Clothing is focusing on the brands very early history, and the garments worn by miners back in the late 19th century. And in the collection there is a reproduction of the so called Triple Pleated Blouse, known as the earliest jacket ever made by Levi’s back in 1878. The jacket is made in a fantastic 100% cotton, natural indigo gingham that’s been heavily washed and distressed to get the true vintage miner feeling. And it sure looks like it has been lying around the desert for quite a long time.

One detail of this jacket since its supposed to have the look of an old miners garment is that the jacket comes bleached and with some holes in it. And since we at Unionville have mixed feelings about selling clothes with holes in them we decided to take care of this beautiful jacket and have it repaired. And to show our respect for the garment and to give it a little bit of true 19th century history we decided to do the repairs by hand using original cloth that has been lying in the desert since late 19th century. Then we stitched it by hand using cotton thread to come close as possible to how it probably would have been done back in the days. With other words, in this garment you will get a piece of levi’s history combined with some real vintage material history. And we hope you will enjoy wearing this amazing jacket.

We feel proud to be able to work with what is probably one of the finest producer of leather jackets made today. The Himel Brothers Leather company is based in Toronto, Canada and they produce a small line of leather jackets using the finest qualities and with a passion for craftsmanship as well as for details. The company is now run by Dave Himel but the craftsmanship of working with leather runs way back in the family. And today these jackets are tailored made from start to finish using the two hands of the one and same tailor.

Made of goatskin or horsehide, this is a simple smart A-1 cossack jacket. The full grain vegetable tanned leather sports military style buttons, gimped button keyholes, deep cotton lined patch pockets and shawl collar. The back panel is a single piece of leather with nickel d-rings for adjustment of the v-gussets.

The buttons close up under the chin with a wind proofing chin strap. The jacket is lined in the finest mole skin cotton flannelette and black cotton cloth. Each jacket is bench crafted by one tailor from start to finish. Each piece carefully selected for grain pattern and hand cut and skived for a finished look. The contrasting cotton topstitch ensures strong long lasting tailoring. Finished in the best manner for smart appearance!

We would like to thank Von Sven for the fantastic work he made painting our new sign, a great friend and a great craftsman when it comes to old style signs. Made by hand painted straight on two oak planks. It will be hanging outside the store during the open hours.

Blue Highway – Men’s File

Our good friend and partner in crime Calle Stoltz spent a day at Unionville together with Douglas (Hampus was home sick) and took the photos of Douglas in the making of a pair of Blue Highway Jeans. The model in the completed jeans is Sivletto/Unionvilles own Gustav.

Showing his true colors

We got a nice picture from our good friend the Jack Tar Tobias who has been wearing a pair of Blue Highway jeans for approximately one year now. And when he sailed the coast west of Africa, that is where he let the sea rinse his jeans, tied in the other end of the rope and dragged behind the boat. Indeed a very nice way to treat a pair of unwashed jeans.

Willcox & Gibbs chain stitch machine

The other day we made room in the store to bring in our latest machine, and it sure feels fine to be able to sew with a chain stitch machine that’s more than one hundred years old. In 1859 Willcox & Gibbs were founded and the machine that they created is known as one of the pioneers when it comes to chain stitch, and this is made using a single upper thread and a lower lopper design that hooks the threat in every stitch. Today the early models made by Willcox & Gibbs are consider highly collectible among sewing machine collectors, all because of its beautiful lines and superb stitching. The model that we came across here in Stockholm dates to around 1905 and it still runs like a clock making the same stitches that came to change a lot in the early industrial sewing industry.

So if you prefer to have your jeans hemmed using a chain stitch machine of the very early type, stop by the store and listen to the sound of a machine that radiates history.
